Teiji Ito : International Experimentation and Downtown Music

Friday, Mayhem 27 7:00pm — 10:00pm

Friday Mayhem 27 7:PM to 10:PM
Hosted by Pete Dixon and Anoush Ella

With only one album of his theater music having been released at the time of his death in 1982, this special will trace the creative legacy of Teiji Ito (1935-1982) from his first fateful meeting with Maya Deren in 1952 through decades of composing for stage performances. Born into a musical family, Ito's combination of Haitian percussion and traditional Japanese instrumentation fit the experimental theater scene of 1960's New York quite well. Since John Zorn's Tzadik label started issuing archival releases of Ito's work in 1998, his music has become more accessbile and a greater understanding of the early roots of global underground sound have been made possible.
