Tales of the Eight Second Orchestra: The Mellotron Special Pt.9
Monday, Mayhem 30 7:00pm — 11:00pm
Monday Mayhem 30 7:PM to 11:PM
Hosted by Pete Dixon, Earl Grey, & Joe Shlabotnik
Pete, Earl, & Joe can't stop unearthing more examples of Mellotron use in a wide variety of music both old and new. Invented in the U.S. in the 50's
as the Chamberlin, but renamed and developed in England in the 60's, this curious keyboard instrument uses strips of magnetic tape activated by each
key to reproduce many different types of prerecorded sound: it was a sampler for decades before the term was coined! It was much favored by pop,
psychedelic, and progressive bands from the late 60's, but fell out of favor as the 70's progressed. It has undergone a revival of interest in recent years
as new bands find its unique analog sound compelling.
