"In The Pines" (aka "Black Gal" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night") was first recorded in 1925, and its lyrics were documented by song collector Cecil Sharp even earlier, in 1917. It's among the many songs that John and Alan Lomax recorded in southern prisons during the 30s and 40s. Leadbelly and Bill Monroe both made well-known recordings of the song, under different titles, in the 40s. The song has been performed and recorded hundreds of times since. We'll hear a large variety of approaches to this song, but we will never know what it means.
