A Cursory Introduction to the AACM The AACM (Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians) is an organization of jazz musicians formed in 1965 by jazz pianist Muhal Richard Abrams (other charter members include Jodie Christian, Steve Mc Call and Phil Cohran). Their purpose was to nurture creative music.Early members are a veritable who's who of Chicago jazz luminaries, including Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton,Chico Freeman, members of what was to become the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Leroy Jenkins, Wadada Leo Smith, and others. This special will examine some of the early works of AACM members as a foundation for later investigations, plundering the catalogs of classic Chicago labels such as Delmark Records and Nessa Records.
