So You Call Yourself a DJ? Part One

Tuesday, Mayhem 12 10:00pm — Wednesday, Mayhem 13 2:00am

Tuesday Mayhem 12 10PM-2AM
Hosted by Ras Babo

The term "disc jockey, aka DJ," has evolved a lot over the years. Perhaps originally it was a personality broadcasting on the radio playing different songs from records. More recently it has come to take more specific meanings and branched into different genres. Sure the radio DJ still exists, as we are all testament to that at KFJC. Others call themselves DJ's and never are on the radio. Most mix music in some fashion or another: some create dreamy soundscapes, weaving in and out of tracks and samples. Others prefer mash-ups with quicker, more abrupt exchanges.

The turntablists take bits and pieces of songs and manipulate them by scratching techniques, creating an entirely new sound. In Jamaican Dancehall culture, the term DJ has come to refer to a vocalist who sings or chants on the mic over a live or recorded track.

During this special, your host Ras Babo will explore bits and pieces of all these styles, and seek out examples from anyone in the KFJC library who uses the moniker of DJ in their name.
