Merle Haggard was born April 6th, 1937, in Oildale, California, a town just north of Bakersfield. He started playing guitar and performing while a teenager; he also got in trouble with the law during this time, ending up in San Quentin for attempted armed robbery, in 1958. While in prison he determined to turn his life around; and when he was released in 1960, he began writing songs, performing and recording. His first #1 hit was "Lonesome Fugitive", in 1966. He had thirty-eight #1 hits on the country charts between 1966 and 1987, most of which he wrote or co-wrote. He is still touring and recording. This program features his hits, as well as a selection of songs he wrote.
