Folk Song Roots with Shirley Collins
Hosted by Art Crimes
Shirley Collins has studied and sung English folk songs all her life, many of them native to Sussex , where she has lived most of her life. She has performed in a variety of settings, among them a duo with her late sister Dolly, folk- rock collectives such as The Albion Country Band and, more recently, Current 93. Now retired from performing, she is still active in promoting folk traditions in England. She?s also written a book, "America Over the Water?, about her travels with Alan Lomax on their recording expedition to the American South in 1959, where she heard many American variants of English folk songs she knew well. Recently Art Crimes talked with Shirley about English folk songs and their journey ?Over the Water? to America. We?ll hear English and American versions of a few of those songs, including some of Shirley?s own performances, and a few newly recorded versions of these songs taken from a collection that Shirley annotated: "Songlinks 2" (Fellside).
