Lost in the Ozone Again:
Commander Cody?s Lost Planet Airmen
Hosted by Art Crimes
Everyone knows about Detroit legends like the MC5 and Iggy Pop, kicking out the jams and making rock a contact sport. But around the same time
in Ann Arbor, artist George Frayne christened himself Commander Cody and created his own twisted world of western swing, rockabilly, truckdriver
songs, and salutes to substance abuse. After relocating to San Francisco in 1969, Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen became a fixture in the ballrooms
and nightclubs. They were defiantly un-psychedelic in the Summer of Love. Although best known for their two actual hits, "Hot Rod Lincoln" and "Don't
Let Go", the band never got the rewards they may have anticipated as hard-workin' rock stars. Eventually they reached the end of their road after a
European tour. Most of the original members have moved on, some still playing clubs for a small-but-devoted following, but for awhile Cody's Airmen
were among San Francisco's hidden treasures for those lucky enough to have seen them in the 70s. We'll hear a sampling of live and studio material,
starting from 1970 and up to their last Warner Brothers release.
