Cologne, Germany is a seething hotbed of techno music. The king of all Cologne techno labels is Kompakt, founded in 1998 by minimalist pioneer Wolfgang Voigt, Michael Mayer, and Jurgen Paape. Nine years down the road, the label is a major trendsetter with a distribution arm, production, a shop, and booking all under one roof, and over 200 releases to their credit. Part one of this special will examine Kompakt's foray into the techno and 21st Century pop arena, and will attempt to answer the question, "what is schaffelfieber?".
