The Roland TB-303 Bassline was a product introduced in 1982 as a bass line generator to accompany budding guitar heroes or one-man-band types. It was a dismal failure at its intended purpose, and thus languished in pawn shops and junk stores until rediscovered by some teenaged house producers in Chicago in the late 80?s. The 303, when tweaked, is capable of generating a panoply of otherworldy squelches and burbles, unique in palette, that wreak dance floor devastation. Thus was born ?Acid House?, ?Acid Techno?, or just ?Acid?. This special will trace the rise of Acid House in Chicago, its explosion in England in 1988, and its subsequent mutation in Europe and the States.
