The Crooked Dance: a Tour through Bulgarian Dance Music

Friday, Mayhem 16 9:00pm — Sunday, Mayhem 18 12:59am

Friday Mayhem 16 9pm to Midnight
Hosted by SAL 9000

This fast paced show will explore Bulgaria's provocative and unique traditional dance music, and how the music differs in each region of the country, i.e., Shopluk, Dobrudja, and Thrace. Bulgarian music is unique and so are the types of instruments used, and the complexities of the rhythms, such as 9/8, 11/16 and 17/16. Some examples of bands from outside Bulgaria and around the world who have recorded their own adaptations of this music will also be featured, as well as a few tracks recorded at the Koprivshtitsa folk festival in Bulgaria in 1971 and 1981. This show will also pay a long overdue tribute to accordian player Boris Karlov and Kostadin Varimezov.
