Cassette Culture Underground, Volume 2: The Japanese Edition

Thursday, Mayhem 18 6:00am — 10:00am

Hosted by Nozmo King
KFJC rebroadcasts a special that originally aired on Mayhem 24, 2008.

From the late '70s to the late '80s, cassettes were king. The cassette culture was in part an extension of the mail art movement, and owed much to the DIY ethic. Before digital media, anyone with a cheap, portable 4-track could easily record a cassette and get it out quickly. Twenty years on from the height of its popularity, homemade cassettes are coming back into vogue.

In this edition, guest curator and Nozmo King explore the Japanese scene from past to present, playing obscure, vintage cassettes (and some vinyl). (see playlist).
