John released his first album in 1971 and was active in music until his unfortunate death from Covid, in 2020.  Join me for an informal survey of his music.

Kayo Dot Chronology

Wednesday, Mayhem 11 7:00pm — 10:00pm

Founded twenty years ago from the ashes of Maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot have established themselves in a class all their own: wide-ranging and eclectic influences, bending and melding of dark, intense genres, technical virtuosity, relative obscurity. In three hours I'll explore key sonic milestones that chart the winding course Kayo Dot has pursued over the past two decades.

Continuing analysis of the propagation of the “Lab-Leak Theory” of the origin of Covid-19 in the context of what Mr. Emory calls “The Full-Court Press Against China,” this program highlights how what the brilliant Peter Dale Scott has termed “The American Deep State” is proceeding with the institutionalization of the anti-China effort, blaming that country for the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular.

I'm in a Subjunctive Mood

Friday, Mayhem 13 7:00pm — 10:00pm

Hosted By Jersey Girl
The first set of songs will put you into a bad subjunctive mood. If I was one of those artists the nuns would smack my hands. But soon thereafter we’ll get into a good subjunctive mood with artists who know their grammar. If I were a nun I would love them. And if everyone learns their lesson, we might move on to other English grammar.

Colour Haze

Hosted by Carson Street
Fire one up and tune in while we spend three hours with psychedelic brain melters Colour Haze. Formed in the mid-nineties, Colour Haze is the flagship band of the German stoner rock scene. Their sound is a mixture of funk, metal, and heavy rock with fuzzy riffs and doses of eastern influences.

Hosted By Atavist and Beast of Bourbon
Through an extraordinarily varied playlist, Atavist will shed light on the centrality of Earhammer Studios in capturing Bay Area crust, doom, metal, and aligned sounds, while Beast of Bourbon will interview Earhammer founder and engineer Greg Wilkinson. It's hard to imagine the Bay Area extreme music scene without the records that have been recorded at Earhammer. To celebrate Earhammer is, in a sense, to chart the course of Bay Area extreme music over the past couple of decades.

Nuggets II

Saturday, Mayhem 21 12:00pm — 3:00pm

Hosted By Carson Street
In 2001 Rhino Records decided to issue a sequel to their Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era, 1965–1968 compilation. Rather than taking the easy way out and offering another round of American garage rockers they compiled four discs of hidden treasures from non-American garage and psych bands. Most of the tracks we will listen to are from British bands, but there are also selections from a pre-fame Guess Who, New Zealand act the Smoke, the Brazilian psychedelia of Os Mutantes, the exceptional Merseybeat stylings of Uruguay's Los Shakers, and the extraordinary Peruvian combo We All Together, among other non-Brit acts.

Things with grooves…  pressed grooves, lathe-cut grooves, locked grooves, double grooves, reverse grooves, uncooperative grooves, grooves cut every which way into who knows what. Run-ins with run-out grooves. Confused turntables. Breakbeat theory. Probably an interview or two with people who know about this stuff. In any event, the KFJC decks will get a workout.

Tedeschi Trucks Band

Saturday, Mayhem 28 12:00pm — 3:00pm

Hosted By Carson Street
In 2008 guitarist Derek Trucks and his wife, singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi left behind their solo careers to start a new band; one that would combine their shared musical roots of blues, jazz, and gospel. Email your suggestion, and any narrative about your choice, to Sir Cumference at horny@pi2r.me. Then listen on Sunday afternoon, May 29 from noon to 3 to hear your’s and other listener’s selections.

For The Record - Uncle Sam & The Swastika: 25 Years Later

Sunday, Mayhem 29 7:00pm — 8:00pm

Hosted By Dave Emory
Reprising the first of the Archive Shows (originally recorded on 5/23/1980), this program examines the corporate relationships between German and American firms that were instrumental in the rise of the Third Reich. Miscellaneous Archive Show M11—“Uncle Sam and the Swastika: U.S Industrial Support for Nazi Germany” contains insights that are even more relevant and more frightening than they were in 1980. As the 25th anniversary of the original broadcast passed, Mr. Emory re-broadcast the show, with editorial comment before and after its playing. In particular, Mr. Emory noted the hauntingly contemporary insights that author James Stewart Martin imparted at the conclusion of his landmark text All Honorable Men. Mr. Martin warned that the American component of the trans-Atlantic fraternity that had funded and armed Hitler might choose to bring fascism to America “as a calm judgment of business necessity.”

For The Record - Deep Politics and the Death of Iris Chang, Parts 1 & 2

Sunday, Mayhem 29 8:00pm — 10:00pm

Hosted By Dave Emory
Late last year (2019), the city of San Jose (California) opened a park dedicated to the memory of the late author Iris Chang.
These broadcasts update and supplement discussion of Iris Chang’s alleged “suicide,” highlighted in FTR #509. Of particular significance is the fact that the Golden Lily loot and the decisive political and economic factors stemming from the material covered in Gold Warriors, the other books by Sterling and Peggy Seagrave, and Ms. Chang’s The Rape of Nanking, have enormous and ongoing significance.
